Apple first announced the latest iOS software update at WWDC 2021 back in June along with corresponding updates for iPad, Mac and the Apple Watch. The first developer beta became available on June 9 and this was then followed by the start of the public beta on June 30. With the stable and user-ready version now available, iOS 15 can be installed on iPhone models dating back to the iPhone 6S. However, some features are only available on newer iPhone models. Shared with You allows users to share content through the Messages app from supported iPhone apps, including Apple Music and Apple TV. The rest of the supported app list is currently limited to Safari, Apple Photos, Podcasts and News. Each app now comes with its own Shared with You section where anything shared is automatically stored. Finding this section depends on the app, although they are in similar locations in general. For example, the Shared with You section can be found in the Listen Now tab on Apple Music or under Watch Now when using Apple TV. Users are also able to disable storing in this section on a per-conversation basis through the Messages app. To do this, open the text conversation, tap on the user’s name and then turn “Show in Shared With You” to off.
How To Share Content With Others
As there are multiple apps, the instructions on how to share content can vary slightly. For example, if using the Apple Music or News app, tap on the media in question and hit the three-dot ‘More’ button, and then choose ‘Share Song’ or ‘Share Album’ (or ‘Share Story’ in News). From there, tap ‘Messages’ and select the contact before hitting send. In the Apple TV, Safari or Photos app, choose the video, website or image, tap on the ‘Share’ button, select Messages, choose a contact and send the message. Lastly, if sharing a Podcast episode, tap the ‘More’ button followed by ‘Share’ and then ‘Messages’ before selecting a contact and sending.
The end goal with Shared with You is to simply provide a way for users to quickly access songs, videos, articles and other content that has previously been shared through the Messages app. Although there are multiple apps involved, Apple has looked to streamline the process and the experience with some additional features. For example, the ability to pin content and even reply directly within the Shared with You section of one of Apple’s apps.
