Wallet Draining apps are malicious apps designed to trick users into typing in their secret passphrases or taking other actions that will allow the attacker to steal all of the digital assets belonging to these victims. These assets, which include NFTs and cryptocurrency, are swiped from a cryptocurrency wallet. Per Bleeping Computers, for the second time in about a month, a tweet from a company about to list a Bitcoin wallet in the App Store warned iPhone and iPad users about a fake app with a similar name.
In the most recent situation, a company offering a crypto wallet called Leather sent out an urgent tweet warning about the fake Leather Wallet app in the App Store. The tweet said, “The Leather Wallet app currently in the iOS store is FAKE. Do not download it, and definitely do not input your seed phrase. We promise we’ll let you know once our mobile app is actually ready! Leather should only be downloaded directly from http://leather.io.”
If this sounds vaguely familiar, almost three weeks ago we told you about a crypto wallet called Rabby Wallet that also was awaiting its App Store listing and a fake version of the app appeared on the App Store. By one account, over $100,000 was stolen by the fake app before it was kicked out of the App Store.
Fake Leather Wallet is listed in the App Store
Several crypto investors tweeted about getting ripped off by the fake Leather app. One tweet, written by “X” subscriber “@CryptoVonDoom” wrote, “Just lost my [Bitcoin] ordinals.
Might have downloaded a bad version of Leather Wallet from the App Store. Unbelievable. All my decent stuff went here.” Another “X” user, @wherermyprofits, pointed out that he also had been a victim of the same fraud the day before. “I feel you brother. I was drained yesterday. I lost everything I had on ETH. Years of grinding, gone…”
At least two investors got ripped off by the fake Leather Wallet app
Disturbingly, the fake Leather Wallet app had a 4.9 rating in the App Store and seems to have been dropped from the App Store only recently. Make sure that you do not have the Leather Wallet and Hiro Bitcoin installed on your iPhone or iPad if you downloaded it from the App Store. If you do have it on any of your Apple devices, uninstall it immediately.
