At about 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, AT&T said it had made progress in restoring its network. By mid-afternoon, it said service had been fully restored. “We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers,” AT&T said in a…

Next month we expect to see the first iPads to carry an OLED display introduced when Apple unveils the 11-inch iPad Pro (2024) and 13-inch iPad Pro (2024). Omdia created a road map showing when we can expect future changes to iPad models as they move away from LCD to OLED screens. The road map starts with the aforementioned switch to OLED this year for the top-of-the-line iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch tablets. The iPad Pro (2024) displays will use a hybrid mix of OLED, LTPO, and RGB. LTPO allows the refresh range to be dynamically adjusted based on the content…
Google has a long history of killing and rebranding services, and their payment offerings are no exception. In a move to simplify the company’s product lineup, Google has announced that it will be sunsetting the dedicated Google Pay app in the US early this summer.Google launched the dedicated Google Pay app back in 2018, replacing Android Pay and reinventing itself as a unified payment service where you could see your recent purchases, find nearby stores, access rewards, complete peer-to-peer payments, and store a variety of payment and loyalty cards. This app was later split into Google Pay (for rewards and…
No longer sold by Apple itself or most major US retailers… in brand-new condition, the 2021-released iPhone 13 Pro Max can be a very smart purchase in 2024 as a refurb when found at the right price.Although we’re fully aware that buying refurbished devices can feel risky at times, there aren’t a lot of things that can go wrong when a 1-year warranty is involved. Granted, this doesn’t come directly from Apple as far as the deeply discounted iPhone 13 Pro Max units currently sold by Woot are concerned, but such an extended warranty can give buyers great peace of…
What’s the all-around best tablet money can buy in 2024? Probably not the 2021-released iPad mini for… all the obvious reasons, starting (and ending) with its advanced age and consequently outdated internals. But what if you like your slates nice and compact and don’t want to spend a small fortune on an Apple-made device with 256GB storage? In that case, we can’t recommend the sixth-generation iPad mini strongly enough at a rare $120 discount from a $649 list price. This cool new Amazon deal is naturally not completely without precedent, but as far as we know, the last time bargain hunters were…
An Oklahoma man used his computer skills to defraud Uncle Sam, hacking into a government auction site to lower the price of vehicles and jewelry he’d successfully bid on from thousands of dollars down to one buck, federal prosecutors said.Evan James Coker, 41, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a scheme involving online auctions run by the General Service Administration to see off surplus, seized or forfeited assets held by the government, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Minnesota. The auctions are conducted online through servers in Eagan, Minnesota, noted U.S. States Attorney Andrew Luger. Between Feb. 25 and…
The FDA yesterday made an announcement that could put the kibosh on the plans drummed up by Apple and Samsung to put a non-invasive blood glucose sensor on their smartwatches. Such a feature would allow insulin-dependent diabetics to test their blood sugar painlessly and inexpensively using these devices. Currently, to determine how much insulin they need to take before each meal, a diabetic uses a small needle called a lancet to draw blood from his/her finger. A drop of the blood is placed on an expensive non-reusable test strip which has already been inserted inside a machine called a glucometer. While…
U.S. federal agencies are investigating what caused a major outage for AT&T subscribers this morning. With AT&T’s network going down, Mobile Virtual Network Operators or MVNOs that rely on the AT&T network, such as Cricket, also suffered outages. Verizon and T-Mobile claim that their networks never had any issues and the problems that their subscribers had were due to their inability to connect to an AT&T customer. As an aside, analysis of Google Search data discovered a whopping 567% increase in online searches for ‘Cancel ATT’ on Thursday. In an online statement, AT&T said this morning, “Some of our customers are…
Google’s Gemini AI chatbot has temporarily suspended its ability to generate images of people. This move comes after backlash regarding the AI’s tendency to skew image generation of people towards darker skin tones, especially when it pertains to historical context.Initially, realizing that the problem was more impactful than originally thought, Google promised to fix the issues via a social media post. However, the situation appears to have escalated, leading to a temporary but complete shutdown of this particular feature on Gemini’s website. We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature. While we do this, we’re going to…
Are you on a tight budget and want to know what your top smartwatch options are right now? While we’d normally recommend you look at multiple different devices and carefully consider how each one fits your preferences and… financial resources before making your final buying decision, the latest (and greatest ever) Apple Watch SE 2 promotion makes the whole process easier than ever.As long as you’re an iPhone user and can’t afford or simply don’t want to pay a premium for a high-end Apple Watch Series 9 or rugged Ultra model, the 2022-released second-gen Apple Watch SE looks like an…
While global smartphone shipments are widely expected to surge in 2024 following several years of decline, one of the world’s largest markets continued its struggles in January. According to the latest preliminary data put together by Counterpoint Research, the US saw 10 percent less sales in the first month of the new year compared to the same period in 2023.That’s obviously… not great, but it might not be terrible either, with a “rebound” of sorts “likely” to be driven by the Galaxy S24 family in February. Of course, Samsung’s newest ultra-high-end handsets became available in late January, but that was…
I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about transportation in general, since it’s one of the biggest areas we need to clean up to address climate change: it accounts for something like a quarter of global emissions. And the vehicles that we use to shuttle around to work, school, and the grocery store in many parts of the world are a huge piece of the problem. Last week, MIT Technology Review hosted an event where my colleagues and I dug into a conversation about the future of batteries and the materials that go into them. We got so many…
The foldable smartphone market has welcomed another addition, this time from the Chinese company Huawei. Around two years after its predecessor, the P50 Pocket, debuted, the second generation of Huawei’s clamshell foldable smartphone, the Huawei Pocket 2, is now here. The Huawei Pocket 2 features a 6.94-inch foldable OLED inner screen, supporting a 1-120 Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate. It has a maximum screen brightness of 2200 nits. As with any foldable, you may wonder what the hinge is like. Well, Huawei Pocket 2 features a waterdrop hinge for a seamless fold with no gap. This hinge design not only allows…
Smartwatches and rings that claim to measure blood sugar levels for medical purposes without piercing the skin could be dangerous and should be avoided, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Wednesday. The caution applies to any watch or ring, regardless of brand, that claims to measure blood glucose levels in a noninvasive way, the agency said. The FDA said it has not authorized any such device. The agency’s notice doesn’t apply to smartwatch apps linked to sensors, such as continuous glucose monitoring systems that measure blood sugar directly. Roughly 37 million Americans have diabetes. People with the disease aren’t able to effectively regulate…
